In this hands-on, 1-hour outdoor class, explore how a single bean — Theobroma cacao, “the food of the gods” — transformed from a sacred Mesoamerican drink into a beloved winter indulgence.


What You’ll Experience

  • Discover how the Maya brewed cacao with water, maize, and spices to create a frothy ceremonial drink.

  • Learn how Hernán Cortés and Spanish colonists introduced cacao to Europe, where sugar and milk transformed it into a sweet luxury.

  • Make a 19th century hot chocolate recipe.
